Online Video Poker Glossary of Terms
If you’re new to the world of video poker, read through the definitions of the terms used in this game, as found in the jackpotcentral Video Poker Glossary and Guide to Video Poker Terms to improve your understanding of the game and increase your chances of winning.
Ace-High:
A poker hand with ace as its highest card. It has no pair or any better card.
Aces Full:
A full house comprising 3 aces and a pair.
Court Card:
Describes cards with faces on them, such as Kings, Queens and Jacks.
Cowboy:
Synonym for King.
Credit:
This is virtual money used to play online video poker.
Draw Poker:
A game of poker in which you get five cards, of which you might throw away one or more and replace with new cards. All video poker games are variations of draw poker.
Flat Top:
Video poker machines that give out set jackpot payouts.
Flush:
These are five same-suit cards, though not in sequence.
Four-Flush:
These are four cards of the same suit. If you have a fifth card of the same suit, it would cause a flush.
Hand:
This is a description of the five cards dealt to you.
High Card:
This is the hand card bearing the highest value.
High Pair:
This comprises any pair that will pay off, usually a pair of Jacks, if not better.
Inside Straight:
These comprise the four cards of a straight, without the inside card. For example, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 9 needs a 6 (or inside card) to complete the straight.
Jacks or Better Video Poker:
This is a popular variant of video poker. For this game, you need to have a minimum of a pair of Jacks or higher for a payout.
Joker:
Of a 52-card deck, this is the 53rd card or a wild card.
Kicker:
In a hand, this is the highest and the most unmatchable card.
One-Gap:
Another term for Inside Straight.
Outside Straight:
Describes four cards bearing consecutive values that could turn into straight if the player draws a card that fits on either end of the card sequence.
Pat Hand:
A really good starting hand where you hold all five cards.
Payoff Schedule:
A list that shows the winning combinations for a particular video poker machine with the matching payback.
Rainbow:
Different suits of three or four cards.
Rank:
A card’s value.
Run:
Synonym for a straight.
Straight:
Five sequential cards, but not of the same suit.
Straight Flush:
A straight flush is a mix of any five cards in sequence of the same suit.
Three Flush:
These are three cards of one suit.
Two Flush:
These are two similar-suit cards.
Two Pair:
Two cards of one rank and two cards of a different rank, plus a kicker.
Video Poker Royal Flush:
The highest ranking hand in this game, it comprises a King, Queen, Jack, Ace and a 10 of the same suit.
Wild Card:
This is a substitute card for any other in the deck.
